In general, Tuesday afternoons are my favourite, especially a sunny one like today. Wherever I am on the Nueva Vida property I can hear laughter and cheering and the resounding joy is a testement to the work of the ministry. Picture this...
A loose canopy of leaves, in a brilliant green, covers a space to the side of the church. Fifteen meters below, a white board is propped up on a log bench, it's enscriptions being copied by a half a dozen english students. They talk amoungst themsleves, leaning over each other's notebooks with curious faces, laughing at attempted translations. Beyond them, teenage boys, white and brown, are seen in thier natural environment, the muddy soccer field. A goal is scored and shirt comes off in a jumping clamber of carefree shouts from the players. Friends stand at the sideline, a shallow trench in the ground, and cheer. Two little boys cheer from a tree the hangs over the corner of the field.
In the church, plastic lawn chairs that serve faithfully as pews are arranged in a circle. 13-25 year old girls are gatherin them, listening intently to each other's testimonies and stories of women in the bible. Braided bracelets are secretly being finished in laps, but the mood is sincere.
Tucked into the courtyard of the building we live in, a keyboard is plugged into a small speaker and a couple of young men gathered around are working on their singing skills. A couple gringos beside them are teahing guitar. Before long the piano lessons turn into a worship session, and the joyous songs mix with the laughter of kids chasing each other outside and cheers from the field all blend together.
The sky's light begins to dim and it's radiant blue is overcome with a pink tinge. It is beautiful the way the assortment of tropical trees paint a jagged horizon against it. Underneath it a small crowd has dispersed in a haphazard game of kickball. Adults, teens and kids, grinos and nicas. A volleyball is passed on the sidelines and groups of people clammer together, sitting along the wall or standing in cirlces, to talk and play. There is cheering and laughter and screeches from tickling but it is peaceful and lovely. Everyone, even the gringos, know everyone else. I'm pretty sure that this is community at it's finest. Life to the fullest. Perfect.
